Barrio Chino Rings in the Year of the Snake

Celebrations in Buenos Aires chinatown this year were wild and the number of people that came to participate were STAGGERING.  They have been celebrating for the last 8 yrs and this has got to be the biggest turn out yet with at least 3000 people....many of them Argentines who enjoy embracing another culture.

Just to explain the set up so you can visualize, chinatown is a block of streets tucked away in my neighbourhood. But near chinatown is huge park called "Barrancas de Belgrano". There were events going on in both chinatown and the park as well. In the plaza they even had a huge fair selling nothing but Chinese goods and food, much like the night market in Hong Kong.

This year was the first time they had a stage where they had a taoist ceremony, the dotting of the eye of the dragon (waking the dragon), chinese singers, kung fu demonstrations and so much more.  Being asian in another country has never felt more comfortable and you can count me to be there next year when we ring in the year of the horse....

The Anatomy of a Serpent

Well its official, as of feb 10 the Dragon has shed its wings and become a snake. And thus begins the Year of the Snake.  Another synonym for snake is serpent or serpentine.....serpentine as in "Argentine Serpentine".  For those of you who regularly connect with this blog, the story of me and my femme fatale friend whom I have dubbed "The Argentine Serpentine" has been a running theme on this blog.  My posts about my femme fatale friend have always been funny, light hearted, witty as you my audience watch her constant attempts to cast a spell on me and seduce me into her charms.

The Christian faith doesn't portray the snake in a positive light but there are many other cultures and belief systems where the snake is revered as a symbol of healing, wisdom, and beauty. Having just become the year of the snake, I thought it would be a perfect time to talk about the Argentine Serpentine from a very different perspective and celebrate her charm, beauty and all the positive things about this special someone that I cherish.

Sexing It Up in the City

In light of Valentines days, todays blog ventures into the mysterious world of sex hotels (telos) in Buenos Aires. For those of you who may be hesitant to read another word, you can take a breather. There is nothing racy about this article in the least. It's more or less informative. In short, I am telling all about telos.

Sex hotels here don't have flashing lights like you would imagine one in Vegas would have.  Here is a picture  of one that is round the corner from where I live. As you can see, it looks like a plain building with a little sign.....blink and you'll miss it.

The business of sex hotels in Argentina is actually really organized. There are different chains of love hotels (like albergues transitorios) and each ones have different features. You have the option to rent a room for 3 hrs or 2 hrs at a time for a flat rate and there are rates if you and that someone special wanna stay the night with breakfast included. And this may give you a laugh but there are promos and online coupons you can get to receive a discount.

These hotels have peak times for business and low times as well. Alot of them offer a special discounted rate if you come during times of less occupancy. Or others may offer a 90 minute room rental for an extra low rate.

Telos are a very real business with staff, security, wifi, catering, theme rooms, vibrating beds and so much more. You can order room service and then food will come to you through a slot in the door so you can continue to maintain privacy and keep the mood you've set (or that you've been trying to set haha)

There is actually a whole world of gastronomy inside the world of sex hotels and some clients of these hotels have high standard and sophistication when it comes to food choices. After you satisfy one type of carnal desire you can pick up the phone and get another type satisfied to replenish you and give you strength so you can attend to your first carnal desire.

Here is a link to a great article in spanish on Planeta Joy about gastronomy in the world of sex hotels.

Boulangerie Cocu: Je t'aime à la folie

"Bonjour! Je m'appelle Angelina. Je suis chinois. Je voudrais un petit déjeuner "

Living in south america the last thing I ever expected was to have french words flying out of my mouth. I honestly thought that after taking my last French exam in high school and hiding those hideous French grammar books where they'll never see the light of day that it was done and over. Yet there I was in the middle of Boulangerie Cocu speaking french and being understood perfectly.

On February 2, I had an amazing opportunity to indulge in the french tradition known as "La Chandeleur".  Basically it is crepe day in France where nation-wide the whole country eats crêpés in celebration of the purification of the Virgin Mary and the presentation of baby Jesus.  Though being far from home, the wonderful team at Cocu were determined not to forget their roots and decided that the french community here should be able to celebrate the eating of crêpés just like in their native land of France.
